The Department of Sociology at Kalahandi University is an august department growing with genuinely committed faculties under the academic and administrative leadership of honourable Vice-Chancellor. The department theoretically as well as empirically engaged the students by following the Post-Graduate (Master of Arts) syllabus. The students are critically involved with the syllabus. They are mostly engaged with social issues by the back-up of the sociological theories. The students also expertise with sociological tradition of India, Indian society, kinship pattern, gender, marginalised communities, tribal and Dalit studies, health, social movements, economic, social, cultural and political issues, media and society, science and technology, rural and urban issues, patterns of social exclusion, inequality and policies of inclusion. The students receive handholding supports in research methodology like field survey, in-depth interviews, ethnography, social mapping, data cleaning, project designing and report writing looking at the social issues. The students are trained mostly in sociologically thought and the social problems. The department follows the uniform CBCS syllabus as prescribed by the Department of Higher Education, Government of Odisha for the Under Graduate (sanctioned students’ strength is 38) level. Post Graduate (PG) course was introduced from 2020 and admission started in 2021 (under the newly established Kalahandi University with a sanctioned student strength of 32.) Ph.D. course is being offered from the session 2022-23. The learners are always made aware of the wide scope for their future. Efforts are on to enhance the quality of the students by giving them opportunities of interaction with the senior faculty members of other institutions by means of special classes.
